The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.

Responsibilities

GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Director of the Health Promotion Office (HPO) provides visionary and strategic leadership for the well-being of University of Rochester students, advancing a comprehensive, inclusive, and progressive student wellness model which creates the conditions for students to flourish both academically and personally. The Health Promotion Office is an essential part of the division of University Student Life (USL) and is situated in the Office of the Dean of Students. Reporting to the Associate Dean of Students, the Director is responsible for centering well-being throughout all pillars of student life, as well as within academic spaces across all schools of the University. The Director is a key thought partner to USL leadership around student well-being and is responsible for leading a variety of tactics aimed to achieve the goals and objectives outlined in the university’s strategic plan, Boundless Possibility.

This position supervises a growing team of four direct reports and is responsible for strategic planning, staffing, personnel management / development, oversight of department budget, and general office operations. Leads special initiatives / projects for the Health Promotion Office. Works in tandem with various stakeholders including University senior leadership, directors, deans, faculty, and donors to foster an environment that values student well-being.

Essential Functions

Strategic Leadership:

• Provides vision, direction, innovation, and strategic leadership for the Health Promotion Office
• Develops and maintains a strong, evidence-informed short- and long-term strategic plan for the HPO based on relevant, measurable, and practical health and behavioral outcomes. Utilize theoretical frameworks to progress toward establishing a health promoting university.
• Evaluates need, opportunity, and impact of programs and initiatives. Oversees the planning, development, and implementation of theory-based and evidence-informed health promotion strategies. Ensures a thoughtful combination of individual, community, and environmental-level interventions. Leads the delivery of programs that have a high likelihood of achieving measurable improvements in health behaviors and status and/or enhanced student success. Maintains an emphasis on primary and secondary levels of prevention.

Assessment & Evaluation

Directs the development, implementation, and analysis of a variety of assessment efforts including:

• An annual wellbeing assessment of students to evaluate the physical and mental health of our campus community.
• Periodic environmental assessments/audits in the areas of mental health, suicide prevention, sleep, and overall wellness.
• Periodic review of University policies through a prevention lens.
• Surveys to assess the knowledge, perception, and awareness of the HPO. Surveys to investigate the health and wellness needs and interests of our student population.
• Evaluations which measure the effectiveness of the HPO’s interventions, programs, and services.
• Quality Improvement reports for the HPO.
• Focus groups to solicit feedback from students and student leaders.
• Makes data-informed decisions after seeking, collecting, and analyzing qualitative and quantitative data to identify trends, needs, opportunities, and evidence of impact.
• Compiles data from all assessment efforts and synthesize the results in an Annual Report at the end of each academic year.

Engagement

• Strategically works to increase awareness of and engagement in the programs and services provided by the HPO through collaborative partnerships and innovative marketing and communication strategies.
• Engage in intentional and ongoing relationship building with University leadership, key stakeholders, campus partners, and community organizations to develop opportunities which enhance student well-being. Co-chairs a campus-wide student well-being committee.
• Adopts various approaches to engage students in the development and expansion of student well-being initiatives, including formation of wellness champions, engagement of Peer Health Advocates, and support of student-initiated wellness programs.

Health Equity

• Promotes the values of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion and embodies these principles through decision-making and leadership.
• Fosters a strong commitment to diversity and the provision of culturally responsive initiatives.
• Through collaboration and partnership with the Office of Equity and Inclusion and the Paul Burgett Intercultural Center, addresses the specific needs of our POC and LGBTQ+ community with evidence-based programming that supports their well-being.
• Ensures that HPO staff possess the competencies and cultural sensitivity required to work successfully with our diverse student body.

Administration

• Supervises a team of staff members, undergraduate student employees, and graduate assistants.
• Responsible for recruitment, hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of work performance.
• Conducts regular staff meetings and one-on-one meetings.
• Provides professional development activities and opportunities for staff to continually enhance their expertise in college health promotion.
• Provides guidance for annual goal setting and submit annual performance evaluations for direct reports.
• Prepares and administers the budget for the HPO and the Mindful University Project.
• Assures the budget aligns with the HPO’s strategic initiatives. Continually works to identify and advocate for new opportunities for funding including fundraising and grants.

Professional Development

• Actively participates in professional organizations, preferably in a leadership capacity.
• Participates in research and professional writing, publications, and/or presentations.

Master’s Degree Required

Area of Expertise: Health Promotion / Education, Higher Education, Public Health, or related area

Doctoral Degree Preferred

Required

• 8-10 years of increasingly responsible and higher levels of management experience within health promotion / education, public health, or higher education.
• Demonstrated knowledge of:
• the ACHA Standards of Practice for Health Promotion in Higher Education (SPHPHE) and the Okanagan Charter.
• the conceptualization of health promotion in the context of higher education.
• student development and learning theories and models;
• health promotion, behavior change, and population-based theories and models;
• evidence-informed health promotion programs/initiatives including conducting needs assessments and using results to guide programmatic decisions and budget allocations;
• developing and implementing environmental and policy change activities and strategies; and
• quantitative and qualitative research (e.g., research design, survey development, environmental assessment, focus group design and facilitation, data analysis and interpretation, etc.).
• Commitment to diversity, social justice, and cultural competence and the ability to work in a multicultural environment required
• Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES), Certified in Public Health (CPH), or ACHA’s College Health & Wellness Professional (CHWP), or eligible and intending to become certified.

Preferred

• Excellent written/oral/interpersonal communication required
• Ability to provide leadership and problem-solving skills in analyzing health promotion needs of emerging adults, especially college students required
• Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, manage time efficiently, and prioritize tasks required
• Skills in the areas of:
• presentations, especially with respect to diverse populations.
• budget/fiscal management;
• social media marketing, health communications strategies, and
• grant writing.
