SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
The New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU) is seeking an employee with data management and analysis experience to support the work of the Legal Department primarily, as well as the Policy and Communications Departments. The person in this position will work under the supervision of Legal Department attorneys and in collaboration other NYCLU staff to perform quantitative and qualitative research related to cases and other matters being litigated or otherwise investigated. The person in this position may conduct research and analysis to inform the NYCLU’s policy and public education work.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
• Conduct quantitative and qualitative analyses in support of cases and investigations involving racial, gender, and environmental justice; police accountability; voting rights, criminal legal system reform, immigration.
• Assist in developing requests for public records and data sets.
• Managing large data sets and document productions obtained through public records requests or through investigation, discovery, or compliance monitoring.
• Extract relevant data and information from records and prepare them for analysis.
• Clean, code, format, and prepare data files for analysis.
• Write memos and presentations to communicate findings to a broad audience.
• Create data visualizations.
• Draft declarations in support of litigation.
• Assist on other projects and tasks as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s degree.
• 1-2 years of professional experience; (which can include during undergraduate or graduate studies).
• Experience with data management and analysis, particularly in the context of public interest work.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and at least one of the following languages: R or Stata.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Excellent time management and organizational skills, with the ability to efficiently manage multiple projects simultaneously with consistency and accuracy.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a collegial and diverse environment.
• Demonstrated commitment to civil liberties and civil rights.
Additional Qualifications (preferred, but not required):
• Bachelor’s degree in the social sciences OR bachelor’s degree in any subject area with a strong understanding of social science research methodology.
• Extensive experience using R for data analysis.
• Experience working with public interest or social justice organizations.
• Experience collecting and working with administrative data, particularly data from government agencies, e.g., voter files, Census Bureau population and socioeconomic data sets, law enforcement agency data.
• Experience conveying research findings to audiences with varying levels of competency with data.
