This is a political history of the United States from the Revolution to the second Trump administration, written from the perspective of someone who believes in the 20th-century liberal tradition epitomized by Franklin Roosevelt in 1937, “The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little.” The book describes how the nation has – and, to an important extent, still has not – made progress toward achieving its dream of liberty and equality for all Americans. Liberalism as a political force has been decidedly out of fashion for a long time, but that doesn’t mean it was wrong about the possibility of – and the need for – progress through collective political action.
