Child Life Specialist: Outpatient Services:
At NewYork-Presbyterian Komansky Children’s Hospital, our Certified Child Life Specialists work from a trauma-informed and culturally reflexive practice to support the unique needs of each patient and family in the medical setting. As advocates of family-centered care, the Komansky Child Life and Creative Arts Therapy team works in close partnership with the interdisciplinary team, programming partners, patients, and caregivers to meet the unique emotional, developmental, and cultural needs of each child and family.
This child life specialist position is dedicated to covering the outpatient pediatric sub-specialty clinics and medically complex primary care services. Child Life Services are provided to patients and families based on a clinical understanding of child development and the impact that illness, injury, disability, and hospitalization has on this process. Therapeutic interventions and programming elements are designed to reduce distress, increase adaptive coping, as well as protect and enhance developmental integrity. Child life specialists help children and families cope with medical situations by individualizing care to meet the social, emotional, developmental, and educational needs of each patient through assessment and therapeutic intervention. Interventions often encompass a mix of developmentally appropriate education, play, preparation, and self-expression to help children cope with the medical environment, procedures, illness, and/or injury.
Monday-Friday Days
Rotating weekends and 1 holiday every other year.
Preferred Criteria
1-2 years paid professional experience with hospitalized children
Required Criteria
Bachelor’s Degree in Child Life, Child Development or closely related field
Child Life Council verified internship hours (minimum 480 hours)
Certified Child Life Specialist
Knowledge of child development, medical terminology, developmental/therapeutic play
